Area Information

Jackson County Offers Many Outstanding Outdoor Activities

The Cherokee and the Creek were the last Indians who claimed the area we now call Scottsboro. Sauta town was an Indian village near Scottsboro. The Indians were forcibly removed from this area in 1838. Robert Scott, a state representative and later Scottsboro's founder, moved to Bellefonte in 1834 and operated the "Bellefonte Tavern." Scott moved to what is now Scottsboro in the early 1850s. In 1856 he was able to get a Memphis and Charleston rail line constructed across his property. Jackson County was created by the State Legislature, meeting in Huntsville, on Dec 13, 1819. The county was named after Andrew "Ole Hickory" Jackson, who was visiting in the area at that time.

Alabama's lowlands can be described as subtropical with nearly 60 inches of rain each year. The highest amount of rain reaches the region as afternoon thunderstorms in July, August and September. Summers are extremely hot and humid with temperatures frequently reaching above 100 degrees with the nights cooling slightly. Winter temperatures are mild, rarely dipping below 40 degrees with the humidity level at its lowest in November and December. Spring and fall are very pleasant and spring brings mild temperatures. During the fall, temperatures range from 65 to 85 degrees with low humidity levels. Northern Alabama is generally cooler than the south due to its higher elevations.

Scottsboro and Jackson County residents have come together for "Trade Days" over 100 years to barter, buy and swap goods. The newest attraction is the 50,000 sq ft Unclaimed Baggage Center with clothes, rare violins, and even an Egyptian mummy's tomb. Another area attraction is the Battle of Bridgeport, the largest Civil War reenactment in the state.

The Russell Cave National Monument, once the home of pre-historic Indians, was established in 1961. Nearby Blowing Wind Cave Wildlife Refuge consists of upland hardwoods and limestone rock outcrops. Blowing Wind Cave itself is not open to the public due to the potential for disturbance of federally endangered gray bats. Some portions of the refuge are open and a major attraction is when the bats emerge from the cave an hour near dusk in June-August.

Scottsboro also boasts an $18 million high school. Jackson County and Scottsboro school systems rank in the top 15% of the state's schools. Northeast Alabama Community College meets local higher education needs.
Jackson County offers many outstanding outdoor activities with spectacular caves, lush forests and endless recreational possibilities on area lakes and streams. Scottsboro's Goose Pond Colony is perhaps the county's biggest tourist draw. The 360-acre resort, on Lake Guntersville, features an 18-hole par-72 golf course. Golf Digest gives it 3.5 stars!
